- Genre: Action (falling prey to violence/ cruelty). We chose this as it captures a large target audience, meaning it would be one of the most popular genres.
- Form: Opening to a feature film following the brief.
- Location: Friend’s house or work and various streets.
- Time: Late evening/ night is most fitting for our opening as it builds tension due to the mystery, making it eerie and full of suspense.
- Characters: Victim and gang/ attacker and various extras such as police. Names for the characters have not been finalised due to the availability of actors, however we wish to use unisex names as this minimises complications regarding gender etc.
- Plot outline: Victim leaves house/work, audience follow them on route home and they are attacked/mugged. Plot follows the life of the gang members. As the plot continues, more than one representation of the black community will become apparent, making the plot relatable and correcting to the audience.
- Key micro features: Camera work includes; Establishing shot to inform the audience of the setting/ where it is set, POV to make the audience sympathise with the victim, high angle and low angle shots to add a sense of status within the scene, pans, tracking, close up shows emotion. Editing must be fluid and sharp transitions to indicate the severity of the situation, relevant use of fades when the victim is passing out/ passing away.
- Mise-en-scene: Must been dark to intensify the danger and add mystery to the plot, meaning the equilibrium is disrupted making a good opening according to Todorov. Sound/ music maybe recorded specifically for the opening, rap/ hip-hop is often linked to gang crimes, therefore this maybe relevant to use vs other music. Regarding costumes, street style/ popular clothing brands will be incorporated to indicate the modern period in which it is set. The attackers will wear dark clothing to add to the danger. The police will wear unspecified uniform to ad authenticity without crossing legal boundaries.
- Target audience: Teens, young men, black audience.
- Audience appeal: Characters are young therefore the audience will have a natural relationship with them as they can parallel themselves to them. Gangs are stereotypically predominantly black, therefore it will draw interest to the ethnic minority as they relate to the gang culture or maybe interested in the representation of their ethnicity. The genre of the film may appeal most to men due to the action and violence involved (no violence will be seen, however it will be implied).
- Influential films: Four Brothers, Boys in the Hood, End of Watch, Adulthood and Brotherhood. Many gang films focus of the use of drugs/ selling them and weapons, however this is a lower priority in the UK therefore we want to focus less of this as it isn't relevant to real life. These films have inspired us as they capture media's representation of the ethnic minority, however we wish to explore more than one representation of them.
